It seems Goleta’s finest, in a brilliant display of bureaucratic foresight, will once again be setting up a DUI checkpoint, as dutifully announced by Noozhawk. Because nothing says 'effective policing' like publicly broadcasting where and when you’ll be inconveniencing law-abiding citizens, creating traffic snarls, and nabbing a few low-hanging fruit while actual crime flourishes elsewhere. It’s the governmental equivalent of leaving a 'wet paint' sign on a freshly painted wall and then congratulating yourself when people avoid touching it. Is anyone really fooled that this is about safety, or is it just about hitting quotas and padding the coffers with fines from those who mistakenly believe an unannounced checkpoint is actually, you know, unannounced?

One has to wonder what deep, systemic issues are being ignored while officers are busy playing 'catch the tipsy driver' at a predetermined location. Perhaps the countless unaddressed mental health crises plaguing our streets? The ever-expanding homeless encampments? Or the spiraling costs of living that drive responsible citizens to skip a second glass of Chardonnay because they can barely afford gas, let alone a ride-share?

This isn't about protecting the public; it's about control and optics. It’s a performative act that allows city officials to pat themselves on the back for 'doing something' while avoiding the far more complex and costly problems that require actual leadership, not just a flashlight and a breathalyzer. Maybe, just maybe, if they spent less time advertising their predictable dragnet and more time on proactive policing, they might actually make a dent in the things that truly threaten our community. But alas, that would require real work, and where’s the easy revenue in that?

President Trump’s administration is busy tackling actual national challenges, yet here in our little corner of California, we’re still stuck in the progressive bureaucratic mire, focusing on highly visible, minimally effective gestures. The only thing these checkpoints truly deter is common sense, and the only thing they really 'catch' is an easy headline for outlets like Noozhawk to parrot.
