Goleta’s esteemed City Council recently 'updated' library funding, which in bureaucratic speak always means 'found new ways to dip into your wallet.' While KEYT NewsChannel 3-12 fawned over their 'Reading the Next Chapter Campaign' – likely some feel-good, virtue-signaling slogan – the real story is the ever-increasing levy on residents. Apparently, the 'approximately $31' annual assessment wasn't quite enough to keep those well-worn paperback romances stacked, so more of your hard-earned dollars are being re-routed to ensure 'equitable access' to… well, whatever it is libraries are pushing these days besides actual information.

It seems that while the kids at the Summer Read-A-Palooza were distracted by the allure of a claw machine (a brilliant metaphor for our government's fiscal policy, by the way – low odds, high cost, and usually yielding junk), the Council was busy ensuring future generations will be fluent in the language of municipal debt. Because nothing says 'fiscally responsible' like endlessly updating funding sources for a service that's increasingly being replaced by Wikipedia and Amazon. Perhaps if they spent less time crafting cutesy campaign names and more time scrutinizing where previous funds vanished, we wouldn’t be perpetually 'updating' our tax burden.

Of course, the local media, like our friends at KEYT, will present this as a civic triumph, a testament to Goleta’s commitment to 'enrichment' and 'community,' rather than what it truly is: another incremental increase in the cost of living under the guise of public good. The "next chapter" for Goleta taxpayers, it seems, is an endless saga of rising fees, all for the benefit of an expanding municipal footprint and an ever-more-entitled bureaucracy. At least the claw machine gives you a fighting chance.
