Well, bless their hearts! The Santa Barbara Independent is breathlessly reporting that Anthem Chapel, once again, finds itself battling the Goleta City Council's planning apparatus. Apparently, the Goleta Planning Commission, in its infinite wisdom, found so-called 'safety issues' and deemed the proposed building 'too big' for a church. One can only imagine the sheer terror struck into the hearts of these commissioners by the thought of too many people gathering peaceably to worship. Perhaps they envision stampedes of parishioners over-enthusiastically reaching for the communion wafer, or pews spontaneously combusting under the weight of moral rectitude.

This isn't about parking, folks, nor is it genuinely about 'safety' – unless the safety in question is from the existential threat of organized religion occupying too much space in Goleta's exquisitely planned, secular landscape. We all know the drill: a progressive city council, keen on micromanaging every square inch of private property, suddenly discovers a litany of 'concerns' when a church wants to expand. Oddly, these same concerns often vanish when a luxury condo development or a trendy vegan eatery needs speedy approval.

One can easily connect the dots, which our friends at the Independent seem to have missed. How many of these planning commissioners or council members have ties to developers who might eye that parcel for something more... profitable? Or perhaps it's simply the pervasive bureaucratic bloat, where every permit is an opportunity for endless review and every 'issue' prolongs the process, grinding down even the most patient congregations. It’s almost as if some folks believe that if you make it difficult enough, people will just give up and go home, leaving more room for government-approved activities.

So, as Anthem Chapel prepares its appeal, we suggest they bring not just architectural plans, but perhaps a few lawyers specializing in religious freedom and a very large abacus to tally the absurd cost of Goleta’s regulatory zeal. Maybe then, the 'safety issues' will be seen for what they really are: a convenient excuse to hinder those who don't fit neatly into the progressive planning agenda.
