Santa Barbara Independent's latest historical exposé reminds us that even in 2026, some folks still think France invented 'freedom' and that statues solve everything.

Oh, Santa Barbara Independent, bless your heart. Just when we thought local journalism was focused on important things like Supervisor Carbajal’s travel budget or the latest county zoning shenanigans, you’ve decided to grace us with a deep dive into... French history? Specifically, a piece about how some long-dead Frenchman thought it was a *capital idea* for France to gift the U.S. a massive bronze woman to celebrate our 'freedom from English rule' and the 'abolishment of slavery.' It’s touching, really, this quaint belief that a giant bauble from a nation famous for guillotining its own royalty holds the keys to American liberty.

Now, don't get us wrong, the Statue of Liberty is a fine landmark, if a bit preachy. But to suggest, as the Indy seems to, that its origin story somehow validates modern progressive narratives about our nation's past is, frankly, hilarious. As if a gift from a country that still struggles with its own 'liberté, égalité, fraternité' could truly define the rugged individualism and self-reliance that actually forged this nation. The idea that a bureaucratic, big-government European project could encapsulate the American spirit of minimal government and maximum freedom is peak irony.

What the Indy — and its French-loving historians — conveniently forget is that America’s freedom wasn't granted by some benevolent European. It was *taken* by brave, principled men who valued self-governance and individual rights over statist control, unlike some of the socialist tendencies we see creeping into our own local government. Perhaps instead of romanticizing oversized French souvenirs, the Independent could focus on the *real* threats to liberty right here in Santa Barbara County, like the endless taxes and regulations stifling our local businesses and property owners. But then again, that might require actual investigative journalism, not just regurgitating historical fluff from overseas. Maybe next time, try asking who's profiting from the county's latest 'green' initiative, not who bought us a statue 150 years ago. Just a thought.
