Santa Barbara Unified, bless their politically correct hearts, announced they'll continue dispensing 'free, nutritious meals' through the summer, a fact breathlessly reported by the local fishwrap over at Noozhawk. Because, apparently, feeding children in a city where beachfront property starts at a king's ransom is a radical act of charity, not a symptom of progressive policies that have driven the cost of living straight through the roof. One almost suspects the district creates the conditions for dependency just to swoop in as the benevolent savior.

Indeed, while the rest of us juggle soaring grocery bills and property taxes that make a Saudi prince blush, our betters in the school district are ensuring that, come rain or shine, or another half-baked curriculum mandate, the children will always receive their government-approved gruel. It's a masterclass in making the problem the solution, then taking a bow. What Noozhawk conveniently forgets to mention is how many of these 'needy' families weren't so 'needy' before the state's brilliant leaders decided to legislate prosperity out of existence for anyone without a trust fund or a public sector pension.

Now, don't misunderstand: no child should go hungry. But perhaps, just perhaps, the conversation shouldn't stop at 'free food' and instead pivot to 'why is so much of Santa Barbara now teetering on the edge of poverty despite living in one of the most resource-rich areas on Earth?' Could it be the endless taxes, regulations, and a housing market more fictional than a unicorn riding a rainbow? Nah, that's just crazy talk. It's much easier to print up another virtue-signaling press release and have the local media parrot it as a triumph.

The real story isn't that kids are getting fed; it's that a system engineered by the left has made year-round school meal programs not just a nice-to-have, but a vital crutch. And all the while, the folks who created this mess get to pat themselves on the back for managing the symptoms of their own policy failures. It’s the circle of life, Santa Barbara-style: tax, regulate, then generously provide what you just took away.
