The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk
FORE! MORE FEES! COUNTY HALL CHIEFS HIT TAXPAYERS WITH 'FIRE SUPPRESSION' GOLF CLAP
Noozhawk's mailbag overflows with gripes as Santa Barbara County's latest bright idea to 'solve' wildfires involves sticking residents with yet another tab.

Santa Barbara County, in its infinite wisdom, has apparently discovered fire is hot and, rather than perhaps clear some brush, is now proposing a brand-new 'wildfire suppression fee.' Noozhawk’s brave readers, perhaps after choking on their avocado toast, have naturally chimed in, proving once again that letters to the editor are where otherwise sensible people let elected officials know they're not quite as clever as they think.
One can almost hear the golf claps from County Hall as they unveil this masterstroke: a fee! Because nothing says 'we're on top of things' like another line item on the property tax bill. It’s an exercise in bureaucratic genius, really. Why tackle the root causes, like, say, enforcing fire-safe landscaping or, dare we say, conducting controlled burns without a three-year environmental impact study, when you can just make the residents pay more for the privilege of not spontaneously combusting?
This isn't about safety; it’s about revenue. Mark our words. Every time the county needs a new widget for a pet project or a pay bump for the 'Assistant Deputy Director of Climate Change Response,' another 'fee' magically appears. The cycle is as predictable as a Supervisors' meeting running three hours over schedule while debating the color of recycling bins. Meanwhile, our perpetually 'underfunded' fire department, despite an ever-expanding budget, still struggles with basic forestry management.
So, while Noozhawk dutifully prints the murmurs of discontent from the peasantry, the true story is the endless fiscal black hole that is county government. They'll levy this fee, promise untold safety benefits, and then, come next fire season, probably blame a dry year or insufficient funding from the state — completely ignoring the fact they just squeezed a few more drops from the stone that is the Santa Barbara taxpayer. It’s not suppression they're after; it's appropriation.
