The Santa Barbara Independent is once again dutifully carrying water for the local Housing Industrial Complex, breathlessly reporting on the latest grand scheme to pave over greenspace for 'affordable housing.' It seems our esteemed supervisors are so utterly devoid of original thought or fiscal prudence that their only solution to every problem is to build more government-subsidized shoeboxes, regardless of the cost to taxpayers or the last remaining patches of open land. It's truly a marvel to behold such single-minded devotion to urban sprawl, dressed up as virtuous public service.

One has to wonder if these 'visionaries' have ever considered, oh, say, enforcing existing zoning laws, reducing bureaucratic red tape that strangles actual private development, or perhaps — and this is a wild thought — attracting businesses that pay wages high enough for people to afford market-rate housing? Clearly not. Their preferred strategy is to eye up every publicly owned square foot as a potential goldmine for their developer buddies, all while clucking about 'climate change' and 'sustainable communities.' The hypocrisy would be hilarious if it weren't so infuriating.

And let's not forget the silent beneficiaries here. Every 'affordable housing' project comes with a parade of consultants, impact fees, studies, and administrative bloat that makes a handful of well-connected individuals very rich. It's less about housing the needy and more about feeding the beast of public-sector expansion. While real taxpayers face increasingly cramped living conditions and diminishing recreational opportunities, the political class and their cronies get to pat themselves on the back for 'solving' a problem they largely created with their own big-government interventions.

The real story the Independent missed, as usual, is the sheer cost of this folly.
