FINALLY, COLLEGE SMARTENS UP, RAÍCES GETS ROOTED OUT

The Santa Barbara Independent, our beloved local paper of record (for those who still read paper), breathlessly reported this week that SBCC's 'Raíces' program has been put on ice. Apparently, the wellspring of federal funding dried up, and staff decided to, you know, find jobs that didn't rely on the public dole. While the Indy framed this as some kind of tragedy, we here at The Whipping Post see it for what it is: a rare moment of fiscal sobriety from an institution usually allergic to it.

'Raíces,' for the uninitiated, was one of those feel-good collegiate initiatives designed to help 'first-generation and Hispanic students' navigate the treacherous waters of higher education. Because, as everyone knows, without a specialized guidance counselor funded by Uncle Sam, certain demographics are just utterly lost. Forget actual academic rigor or personal responsibility; what students really need are more programs with vague mission statements and even vaguer metrics for success.

Could it be that students, regardless of background, benefit most from focused instruction, accessible resources available to all, and perhaps a good old-fashioned work ethic? Radical, we know. But back to 'Raíces' — its demise, however temporary, shines a light on the over-reliance on federal handouts that plague so many of our educational institutions. These programs become entrenched, creating administrative bloat and diverting resources from core educational functions.

So, while the bleeding hearts at other local outlets mourn the 'pause' of 'Raíces,' we'll be over here celebrating. Perhaps this unexpected hiccup will force SBCC to re-evaluate what truly serves its students, rather than clinging to programs that only serve to pad administrative resumes and fulfill diversity quotas. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll remember that a college's primary job is education, not social engineering.
