According to the ever-so-earnest Coastal View News, our local government is gearing up for the radical possibility of 'above-normal rainfall.' One can only imagine the white-knuckled terror gripping the hallowed halls of power as they grapple with the concept of a wet winter, a phenomenon known to happen roughly every few years since, well, forever.

While ordinary folks simply check the weather app and perhaps, heaven forbid, trim their own overgrown hedges, our local progressive leadership sees an opportunity. An opportunity, of course, to host meetings. And then more meetings. And likely hire a few 'El Niño Preparedness Coordinators' and 'Storm Equity Liaisons' on six-figure salaries, all while ensuring no actual solutions get implemented beyond perhaps buying an extra pallet of sandbags for photo ops. What's next? A 'Sunshine Preparedness Task Force' for summer?

This isn't about public safety; it's about public payroll. It's about demonstrating 'action' without actually doing anything productive. The real story isn't the rain, it's the torrential downpour of our tax dollars being diverted into yet another bureaucratic exercise in futility. Instead of endlessly discussing 'debris flow scenarios'—a fancy term for dirt sliding downhill—perhaps the county could focus on maintaining existing infrastructure, like clearing drainage ditches or, dare we say, not approving every single dense, high-rise development on steep slopes that exacerbates these very issues. But that would involve actual work, not just committee meetings and pronouncements.

The Trump administration, with its focus on common sense and efficiency, understands that sometimes, rain just falls. Perhaps they should consider a 'Common Sense Readiness Meeting' instead; the county could certainly use one.
