EGG-HEADS’ BIRD-BRAINED SCHEME FLAPS IN THE WIND!

The folks over at UCSB's Daily Nexus, clearly thrilled to report on anything that hints at more government spending and less private property, recently highlighted a 'study' by some graduate students from the vaunted Bren School. Apparently, these academic whiz-kids spent untold hours, probably funded by your increasingly high property taxes, to determine if California's grand '30x30' conservation plan is, shall we say, flying high. Their brilliant conclusion? After sifting through 'environmental data,' these ornithological eggheads found... well, nothing conclusive, but plenty of justification for more 'conservation investments.' Shocking, isn't it? A study out of a progressive institution that screams for more government intervention and spending.

Now, anyone with a lick of common sense knows that a truly robust economy — fueled by responsible energy production and less bureaucratic meddling — does more for habitats than any number of graduate student 'capstone projects.' But no, these 'Mind the GAP' researchers (GAP, naturally, standing for 'Gaps in Access to Public funding for environmental studies') insist that we need to throw more money at the problem. What they conveniently ignore is the actual 'gap' in understanding how these 'conservation efforts' stifle growth, inflate housing costs, and turn vast swaths of productive land into playgrounds for government-funded researchers with clipboards and binoculars.

It's always the same song and dance from the environmental left: identify a 'problem,' conduct a 'study' (often at taxpayer expense), and then demand more taxpayer money to 'solve' it, usually by restricting land use and empowering more bureaucrats. While these scholars are busy counting rare warblers, productive Californians are struggling under the weight of mandates that make energy more expensive and development a four-letter word. Perhaps instead of tracking birds, these future policy-makers should track how many jobs are lost or how much private property value is eroded by their utopian eco-dreams.

The real story the Nexus missed? The true 'avian response' to California's progressive overreach is that many businesses and families are migrating out of the state, taking their tax dollars and ingenuity with them. And no amount of government-funded birdwatching is going to bring them back. But hey, at least we know those grad students got a decent résumé line out of it.
