The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk
DIAMONDS GALA: LOCAL CHARITY ACHIEVES HOUSING PROGRESS… A FEW LUMPY DONUTS AT A TIME!
Noozhawk reports on another champagne-fueled charity bash for 'affordable housing' while Santa Barbara's commoners still can't afford a shed. We bet the caterers made more progress.

Noozhawk recently gushed over Habitat for Humanity Southern Santa Barbara County’s 'Denim & Diamonds' gala, breathlessly reporting that a cool $300,000 was vacuumed up for 'affordable housing.' While visions of philanthropic sugarplums danced in the heads of attendees clad in designer jeans and four-figure bolo ties, one has to wonder if they paused from air-kissing to acknowledge the astronomical cost of simply existing in Santa Barbara.
Three hundred grand, bless its heart, sounds like a lot until you remember that’s roughly enough to buy half a walk-in closet in most parts of this county. One might infer that the champagne flowed freely as the elite decided how to best solve the problems plaguing the very people who clean their pools and park their Teslas. Meanwhile, the average working stiff still needs a second mortgage just to afford a slightly less derelict apartment, if they’re lucky enough to find one that isn't already a short-term rental for out-of-towners with even deeper pockets.
The real story Noozhawk missed, as usual, isn't the well-intentioned but ultimately negligible fundraising, but the systemic idiocy that makes 'affordable housing' a punchline here. Our benevolent local government, with its endless permits, fees, and NIMBY-coddling regulations, ensures that building anything, let alone something affordable, is a financial death march. So, while Habitat for Humanity serves up a few symbolic crumbs, the actual levers of housing relief are jammed stiff by the very bureaucracy many of these gala-goers likely champion on their election ballots.
It’s a tale as old as time in Santa Barbara: lavish parties, grand statements, and exactly zero meaningful change for the plebes. Good thing everyone looked fabulous while demonstrating their heartfelt concern. Perhaps next year they can raise enough to pay for one of the county's endless 'feasibility studies' on why housing costs too much.
