The Whipping Post Take on Pacific Coast Business Times
DA'S OFFICE NETS 'BIG FISH' IN MARINA, WHILE REAL CRIMES SWIM FREE
Santa Barbara’s finest legal minds finally nail the oceanic equivalent of a parking ticket, proving once again our prosecutors are too busy counting scales to count actual criminals.

The folks over at the Pacific Coast Business Times, bless their earnest hearts, recently lauded our District Attorney’s office for reining in scofflaw fishermen. You heard right: illegal commercial fishing. Because when car thefts are up, shoplifting is an Olympic sport, and vagrancy is the new normal, what better way to protect Santa Barbarans than by cracking down on errant anchovy snatchers?
District Attorney John Savrnoch, a man clearly dedicated to the pressing issues, announced a robust settlement against these aquatic ne'er-do-wells. One has to wonder how many hours of taxpayer-funded detective and prosecutorial time went into protecting our precious kelp beds from an extra tuna or two. Meanwhile, property crimes remain a fun free-for-all, and our streets become ever more... 'vibrant.' But hey, at least the marine protected areas are safe from the scourge of an improperly licensed halibut!
This isn't about environmental protection; it's about signaling. It's the grand performance of a progressive DA's office, where soft-on-crime policies for actual human mischief are balanced by the iron fist of marine biology enforcement. While our city struggles with basic public safety, we can all rest easy knowing that the D.A. is keeping a close watch on who's casting their nets a little too wide, proving some 'crimes' are just too juicy to ignore, especially when they don’t involve actual danger to the public.
Perhaps if criminals started declaring their ill-gotten gains as 'sustainable catch' from a protected area, they might actually face some real consequences. But until then, expect our legal system to keep targeting the low-hanging fruit, or in this case, the low-swimming fish, while the serious problems continue to swim freely.
