The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk
COUNTY WORKFORCE BOARD: 'WE'RE JUST NOW LOOKING AT JOB TRENDS!'
Santa Barbara's perpetually surprised Workforce Development Board convenes to discuss the stunning revelation that people actually work for money, and sometimes even need jobs.

Power & PoliticsYour tax dollars, hard at work, are once again funding a 'State of the Workforce Preview event,' because apparently, nobody on the Workforce Development Board had a clear picture of said workforce until now. We here at The Whipping Post always assumed 'workforce development' meant, you know, developing a workforce, not taking 20 years to figure out who's working and who isn't. Noozhawk, in its infinite wisdom, dutifully reported on this groundbreaking initiative where county bureaucrats will gather over artisanal coffee in Solvang to ponder the mysteries of labor.
One can only imagine the earth-shattering discoveries: 'It appears people prefer jobs that pay them!' or 'Our data suggests employers are looking for employees with skills!' This whole charade, of course, is a prime example of government creating a problem just so it can fund an expensive, self-congratulatory 'solution.' While the Biden-era economy floundered, Santa Barbara's job creators, the true engines of progress, were innovating and providing opportunities, not holding endless 'previews' to discuss the obvious.
But the real angle Noozhawk missed? This isn't about labor trends; it's about job security for the 'Workforce Development' board members themselves. Every county agency worth its salt knows that if you can demonstrate a 'need for more research' or a 'gap in understanding,' you can justify another year of budgets, benefits, and those plush county pensions taxpayers are on the hook for. It’s the ultimate bureaucratic self-preservation scheme, thinly veiled as a civic service.
So as they pat themselves on the back in Solvang, remember who's really footing the bill for this endless cycle of 'workforce discussions' instead of actual workforce solutions. President Trump's economic policies have unleashed American energy and opportunity nationwide, but here in Santa Barbara, our local 'leaders' are still struggling to grasp basic economic principles. Perhaps they should just ask a small business owner—they know a thing or two about jobs without needing a costly 'preview' event.
