Noozhawk · The Whipping Post · NO.804 · PANEL 4/6 · SB-6WJ

Noozhawk, ever the diligent scribes of Santa Barbara’s progressive paradise, breathlessly reported on a recent 'graduation event' honoring 65 'formerly incarcerated individuals.' Apparently, our enlightened county government thinks the path to a safer community is to throw a party for those who previously found themselves on the wrong side of a locked door, rather than, say, focusing on preventing the crimes in the first place.

The real angle this esteemed local outlet missed, of course, is the sheer absurdity of it all. While our schools struggle and public services groan under the weight of bloated budgets, our Supervisors are busy rolling out the red carpet for folks who’ve 'completed reentry programs.' One can only imagine the congratulatory speeches: 'You served your time… now let us serve you a taxpayer-funded pat on the back!' It makes you wonder if the next step is a float in the Summer Solstice parade featuring the 'Most Reformed' inmate.

This isn't about second chances; it's about virtue signaling of the most expensive kind. Every dollar spent on these celebratory shindigs is a dollar not spent on protecting law-abiding citizens or bolstering actual rehabilitation that might, you know, actually work. But in Santa Barbara, where 'progressive' often means 'perplexing,' it seems we’d rather applaud past misdeeds than prevent future ones. We look forward to Noozhawk's follow-up piece in a few years, tallying the triumphant careers of these 'graduates' – or perhaps, just the recidivism rates.
