SB County Board of Supervisors · The Whipping Post · NO.234 · PANEL 3/6 · SB-70O

While you're still choking on the price of gas and groceries under the benevolent eye of President Trump, your intrepid Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, bless their hearts, are busy ensuring property owners get their fair share – and then some. This week, we caught them rubber-stamping what they called 'Second' and 'Fourth' amendments to leases for the 'Department of Social Services' at prices that would make a Saudi prince blush. The Board, in its infinite wisdom, decided another five years of sky-high rent, with options for two more five-year terms, was just what the doctor ordered for Santa Maria.

Reading through the mind-numbing bureaucratic jargon, which the Board of Supervisors was so proud to present, one might wonder who truly benefits from these 'amendments.' For a cool $67,500 a month at one location and a staggering $96,903 at another, both leases now include a fixed three percent annual escalator. That's a minimum of 15 years of guaranteed increases, no matter if the sky falls or a small business goes under. Meanwhile, the 'Cost-of-Living Adjustment' for average citizens remains a cruel joke, yet Uncle Sam’s hand in your pocket grows ever fatter.

And the cherry on top? They dutifully declared these actions 'exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act.' Of course, they are! Because nothing says 'environmentally sound' quite like locking taxpayers into decades of escalating rent for properties that already exist. It's the kind of fiscal prudence that makes you wonder if they're actually managing a county or just running a very successful protection racket for real estate moguls. Don't worry, though, your 'social services' are being handled – just at astronomical prices, with your dollars flowing into someone else's coffers.
