COUNTY TO HOUSE 'HOMELESS' WITH YOUR CASH, CALL IT 'WELLNESS'

Santa Barbara County’s ever-expanding bureaucracy, affectionately known as 'Behavioral Wellness' (because 'Spending Your Money on Our Pet Projects' didn't fit on the letterhead), is once again congratulating itself. This time, it's for unveiling the 'Tecolote House' and a shiny new 'Sobering Center.' Apparently, the solution to the county's 'housing crisis' — which seems to grow exponentially with every new 'solution'—is to build more facilities to house the perpetually 'unhoused' and keep them 'stabilized' on the public dime.

While Noozhawk dutifully prints the press release verbatim, we at The Whipping Post see through the velvet ropes and ribbon-cutting photo ops. 'Sobering Center,' they say. We say, 'Another taxpayer-funded flop house for folks who probably wouldn't touch a day of honest work with a ten-foot pole.' The county, flush with our hard-earned dollars, seems to believe that if you just keep throwing enough freebies at a problem, it will magically disappear. Spoiler alert: it doesn't. It just gets more expensive and entrenches the problem deeper.

And let's not forget the grand irony: while everyday working families struggle to afford a postage stamp-sized apartment in this county, our benevolent overlords are busy building what are essentially five-star hostels for those who choose not to participate in the general economy. This isn't 'wellness'; it's economic malfeasance dressed up in progressive jargon. Meanwhile, the 'behavior' of county supervisors approving these bottomless pits of spending remains largely unexamined. Maybe a 'Sobering Center' for their budgeting department is what's really needed.
