COUNTY OPENS 'MITIGATION FUND' AGAIN: TAXPAYERS FORCED TO PAY FOR GREENIE WHIMSY

The Santa Barbara Independent, bless its earnest heart, breathlessly reported this week that the County is once again opening applications for its oh-so-precious Coastal Resource Mitigation Fund grants. 'Mitigation,' of course, is the official government euphemism for 'pay us to feel good about ourselves while accomplishing absolutely nothing measurable.'

One has to wonder if these grant applications are written in crayon, given the usual caliber of 'innovative solutions' funded by similar programs. We're talking about schemes that range from funding studies on seagull migration patterns to elaborate 'restoration' projects that invariably involve importing non-native plants and then hand-watering them for years. Meanwhile, our roads crumble, our public services strain, and our local businesses gasp under the weight of endless regulations and fees – all while the County Hall bureaucrats congratulate themselves on 'protecting' a coastline that has survived millennia without their committee meetings.

Who truly benefits from this endless cycle of 'mitigation' money? It's certainly not the average taxpayer struggling with skyrocketing costs of living. No, these funds are an open invitation for well-connected non-profits, consultants with impressive-sounding but ultimately meaningless degrees, and local environmental activist groups to keep their coffers full. It's the ultimate left-wing shell game: demand permits and fees from productive industries, then funnel that money right back into the ecosystem of 'environmental advocacy' groups who, in turn, lobby for more regulations and more fees. It’s a self-licking ice cream cone, funded by you.
