COUNTY LEADERS SAY 'LET THEM DROWN' TO EMERGENCY PREP

The venerable Santa Barbara Independent, in its typically breathless prose, reports that our Emergency Management Chief has suddenly packed her bags. And why, pray tell, would someone responsible for protecting lives in a region prone to fire, flood, and mud decide to bail? Because county officials, presumably too busy agonizing over bike lane inclusivity and pronoun seminars, effectively told her department to take a hike.

It seems a Grand Jury — that pesky relic of civic accountability — had the audacity to suggest that perhaps, just perhaps, the office charged with saving us from impending doom might need more staff and actual authority. But in our progressive paradise, 'authority' is a dirty word, unless it's wielded by a diversity consultant or a climate activist shutting down highways. Imagine, thinking an emergency chief should actually be empowered to… manage emergencies! What a quaint, almost conservative notion.

So, as the former chief walks, likely to a sensible, less performative county, residents are left to wonder: when the next wildfire rages or the hillside gives way, will our Supervisors be dispatching a crisis communications team to craft an apology for their 'unconscious bias' instead of an evacuation order? This isn't just about a resignation; it’s about a deeply unserious government prioritizing ideological purity over practical safety. Clearly, disaster preparedness isn't as glamorous as, say, a new 'housing first' initiative that miraculously builds no housing.

No doubt the same officials who rejected these common-sense recommendations will be the first on camera after the next calamity, wringing their hands and blaming 'climate change' or 'systemic inequities' for their own dereliction of duty. Perhaps next time, the Grand Jury should recommend a mandatory workshop on 'Emergency Management for Dummies,' specifically tailored for our county supervisors. The only 'emergency' our progressive leaders seem prepared for is a funding opportunity for their next virtue-signaling pet project. For everything else, you're on your own.
