COUNTY LEADERS PAVING THE WAY... TO HIGHER TAXES!

It’s 2026, President Trump is in the White House making America great again, and yet here in Santa Barbara County, our local progressive mandarins on the Board of Supervisors continue to operate as if money grows on trees, specifically those in the public treasury. They’ve just grandly approved nearly $3.2 million for 'pavement rehabilitation' in the North and Central County, which sounds suspiciously like what they approved last year, and the year before that. One has to wonder if these roads are being paved with gold or just really expensive, repeatedly laid asphalt.

The agenda item, a veritable treasure map of taxpayer dollars, dutifully notes the award to Souza Engineering Contracting. It’s always fascinating to see how these ‘lowest responsible bidder’ contracts conveniently climb a few hundred thousand dollars with 'contingency' and 'supplemental items' before the ink even dries. Imagine running your household budget like this – 'Oh, honey, I bought groceries for $200, but there's a $50 'snack contingency' and a $75 'unexpected craving' fund, so it's actually $325!' Your spouse would commit you, but the County Board of Supervisors calls it 'governance.'

And let's not forget the cherry on top: the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) exemption. Because, apparently, laying new asphalt on old asphalt is a groundbreaking environmental endeavor that falls squarely under 'negligible or no expansion of use.' The progressive left, normally hyper-vigilant about a squirrel sneezing, suddenly finds paving millions of dollars of road utterly benign when it involves a multi-million dollar contract. Funny how that works, isn't it? The real angle here, folks, is not just the cost, but the endless cycle of 'maintenance' that seems to perpetually enrich the same contractors while ordinary taxpayers wonder when their property tax bills will finally get a CEQA exemption of their own.
