Noozhawk dutifully reported this week that the Santa Barbara County Health Department, in a groundbreaking display of bureaucratic genius, is urging parents to remember that little thing called 'vaccinations' before sending their little darlings back to school. One might assume that after years of relentless public health messaging, the average parent might have a passing acquaintance with the concept, but apparently, our taxpayer-funded health apparatus isn't taking any chances.

Indeed, the Health Department seems to believe Santa Barbara County is teeming with parents suffering from a collective amnesia outbreak, utterly unaware that routine childhood immunizations are, well, routine. It’s almost as if they think parents are so overwhelmed by choosing the right gluten-free, organic, ethically sourced lunchbox that they’ve entirely forgotten the foundational elements of child-rearing. Next, they’ll be issuing press releases reminding us to feed our children and teach them how to tie their shoes.

Now, while the 'experts' are patting themselves on the back for delivering such vital, never-heard-before information, perhaps they could spare a moment for the actual elephants in the classroom. Like, say, why test scores are plummeting, or why county education funds seem to vanish into an administrative black hole, or how about addressing the runaway vagrancy crisis mere blocks from our schools? But no, let's focus on reminding parents that vaccines exist. Peak bureaucratic efficiency, ladies and gentlemen.

One has to wonder what dazzling insights our County Health Department will offer next. Perhaps a helpful PSA reminding us that water is wet, or that the sun rises in the east. It’s comforting to know our tax dollars are hard at work, disseminating information so self-evident it could be etched on stone tablets by prehistoric cave dwellers. Keep up the good work, fellas; the intellectual heavy lifting is clearly being handled.
