Santa Barbara County's ongoing love affair with stifling regulations hit another predictable speed bump this week, as evidenced by the usual suspects writing to Noozhawk about their wish for more rent control. The letters, which invariably read like a committee meeting minutes from an avocado toast brunch, demand 'solutions' that always involve more government mandates and fewer private property rights. It's truly inspiring to see such unwavering dedication to policies that have, without fail, exacerbated housing shortages everywhere they've been tried.

The real story no one's telling? This isn't about 'affordability' for the masses; it's about control. Every time the Supervisors rubber-stamp another 'housing registry' or 'rent stabilization' scheme, they're not creating a single new unit. Instead, they're tightening the noose on property owners and driving away the very developers who might actually build something. Our elected officials, seemingly allergic to fiscal sense, mistake endless regulation for genuine problem-solving.

And let's not forget the 'housing deficit' figures these folks wave around like a magic wand. Four million homes short, they wail! Funny how these deficits only seem to swell in places with the most aggressive, market-distorting policies. Perhaps if less time was spent drafting letters to the editor about how the government should fix everything, and more time was spent, say, letting the free market actually operate, we might find that 'deficit' magically shrinks. But then, what would the perpetually aggrieved write about?
