COUNTY COOLS ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY, ADOPTS BILLION-DOLLAR BUDGET
Santa Barbara's Board of Supervisors greenlights a gargantuan budget, proving once again that 'fiscal discipline' is just a quaint bedtime story for taxpayers.

Santa Barbara County Supervisors, fresh off their daily matcha lattes and virtue signaling, have graciously bestowed upon us a whopping $1.66 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2026-27. KSBY News dutifully reported on this financial triumph, omitting, of course, the part where local residents collectively sigh as their wallets brace for impact. It seems the only thing growing faster than the county’s spending is the Supervisors' collective amnesia regarding the concept of a balanced checkbook. When will these folks learn? You can’t 'invest' your way out of common sense.
Adding insult to injury, over $122 million is earmarked for 'capital investments.' In plain English, that’s more concrete, more consultants, and more studies on why the homeless problem persists even after throwing billions at it. We’re sure a substantial chunk will also go to 'equity and inclusion' initiatives, which, historically, translate to an expansion of bureaucratic bloat and a shrinking of your disposable income. Meanwhile, taxpayers continue to tighten their belts while the county budget expands like a progressive’s wish list on election eve.
What KSBY, in its earnestness, failed to highlight is the delicate dance between campaign contributions and these 'needed' budget allocations. One has to wonder which well-connected developers or special interest groups are getting their projects blessed under the guise of public good. The real story isn't that a budget was adopted; it's whose pockets are being lined, which favored non-profits are getting a handout, and how many new administrators will be hired to 'manage' this ever-growing financial leviathan. It’s not a budget; it’s a blueprint for extracting maximum dollars from productive citizens while delivering minimum results.
Perhaps the Supervisors should consider a radical idea: cutting spending. Imagine the headlines then! But alas, that would require a level of fiscal sobriety not typically found within government coffers. So, as President Trump continues to slash wasteful federal spending, our local mandarins merrily expand their lavish kingdom, funded by your hard-earned tax dollars. Don't worry, they'll tell you it's all for the children, or the environment, or some other nebulous cause that conveniently justifies never saying 'no' to more spending.
