COUNTY COOLS ON COPS: SUPERVISORS’ 'BABY STEPS' MORE LIKE STUMBLING TODDLERS

It warms the heart to see our esteemed Santa Barbara County Supervisors, in their infinite wisdom and bottomless capacity for bureaucratic dithering, finally taking what the Santa Barbara Independent charitably calls 'baby steps' towards addressing the Sheriff's Office overtime crisis. Baby steps, indeed. More like a toddler trying to navigate a minefield of their own making, while pointing fingers at everyone but themselves.

The real story, as always, isn't what they say, but what they refuse to say. This 'crisis' isn't some unforeseen act of God; it's the predictable outcome of years of progressive-led defunding rhetoric, a chronic understaffing crisis exacerbated by an anti-police climate fostered by the very same local political class now pretending to be concerned. Add to that the state's revolving-door justice policies, which ensure our dedicated deputies are constantly re-arresting the same career criminals, burning through manpower and budgets at an unsustainable rate. But don't expect the Supervisors to connect those dots. That would require actual self-reflection, not just adopting a Grand Jury report that serves as little more than a thinly veiled excuse to avoid tough decisions.

Now, Supervisor Laura Capps, ever the Cassandra of fiscal woes, warns of 'difficult discussions' ahead. We've heard that song before, haven't we? It usually precedes another round of budgetary gymnastics that somehow manages to avoid cutting any of the county's preferred progressive pet projects, while our essential law enforcement services are left to scramble. Meanwhile, the county continues to pour taxpayer dollars into dubious 'social justice' initiatives and environmentalist boondoggles, oblivious to the fact that safe communities are the bedrock of any functioning society.

What's truly missing from this entire 'discussion' is any recognition of why overtime is so high: we simply don't have enough deputies to keep our streets safe thanks to years of neglect and progressive virtue signaling. The supervisors would rather quibble over shift rotations than admit their ideological policies have left the Sheriff's Office—and the public—holding the bag. Don't be fooled by the 'baby steps'; this isn't about solving a problem, it's about managing a public relations nightmare, hoping the problem disappears before the next election.
