SB County Board of Supervisors · The Whipping Post · NO.821 · PANEL 1/6 · SB-1EG

It seems even Santa Barbara County's finest bureaucrats can occasionally acknowledge when their 'revenue enhancement' schemes go a little too far. After just a few months of fleecing local businesses and homeowners with wildly inflated fire protection certificate fees, the Board of Supervisors is magnanimously agreeing to… re-do the fee schedule. Truly, a shining example of fiscal prudence from the very folks who lecture us on budgeting.

According to the official County agenda item, our betters on the Board are setting a hearing to 'administratively correct' Chapter 15, which translates to 'we messed up the numbers, again.' They'll be giving a measly $575 back to 'Major' applicants who were overcharged, but telling the 'Minor' folks to pound sand. It's almost as if they pulled these numbers out of a hat, then realized they'd plucked the wrong rabbit.

But here's the real Whipping Post Take that the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, in its infinite wisdom, conveniently ignored: this isn't just about a math error. It's about the ever-expanding bloat of local government and the relentless quest for more taxpayer dollars, often hidden behind 'safety' mandates. Every new fee, every 'correction,' just solidifies the golden handcuffs on our hard-working citizens and businesses, all while the bureaucracy grows fatter. And to declare this 'general policy and procedure making' not a 'Project' under CEQA? That's rich. They're not building a bridge, but they're certainly building a bigger bill for you.
