The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
CHP ANNOUNCES DRIVER CHECKPOINT: ARE THEY LOOKING FOR DRIVERS... OR FUNDING?
Your favorite local daily, The Santa Barbara Independent, dutifully reports another state-mandated roadblock, likely less about public safety and more about padding Sacramento's coffers or justifying

Well, lookie here! Another alert from the California Highway Patrol, dutifully re-posted by The Santa Barbara Independent, announcing their latest sobriety and driver's license checkpoint. Because nothing says 'freedom' in the Golden State quite like being randomly stopped by an armed agent of the state and asked for your papers, is it? We’re sure this is solely about public safety and absolutely, positively not about generating revenue through fines or meeting some arbitrary quota cooked up in a Sacramento cubicle.
One has to wonder if these checkpoints are genuinely catching droves of dangerously impaired drivers, or if they’re mostly netting folks whose driver's licenses expired six months ago while they waited for the DMV to decide if they were worthy of a new photo. Or perhaps it's those poor souls who can't afford the exorbitant insurance premiums, making them de facto criminals in a state that seems to penalize the working class for existing. It’s certainly easier to set up cones and inconvenience law-abiding citizens than, say, address the revolving door justice system that puts actual repeat offenders back on the street.
But hey, at least The Independent earned some easy clicks by regurgitating a press release. It's the kind of hard-hitting journalism that keeps us all informed... about where to avoid driving on a particular evening. Meanwhile, the real stories – like who benefits from all those collected fines and whether these checkpoints are truly cost-effective for taxpayers – remain largely unexamined. Perhaps they'll get to it after their next glowing profile of a progressive city councilmember's new bike lane initiative. Don't hold your breath.
