Noozhawk reports Carpinteria residents are up in arms, or rather, up in their Range Rovers, about a proposed 191-unit housing development on the revered Bluffs. It seems the environmental review process has been hijacked by a chorus of local voices who are suddenly very concerned about, well, everything that isn't their own property value. One might assume they're worried about 'traffic' or 'view corridors,' which are, of course, proper nouns for 'more people who aren't me' and 'my unimpeded sightline while drinking kombucha on my patio.'

It's a classic tale: everyone wants affordable housing, just not in their backyard, or, heaven forbid, in a picturesque location that could actually ease the housing crunch for young families or—gasp—service workers! The irony is rich enough to butter the Bluffs themselves. These are the same progressive types who champion 'housing for all' until 'all' means someone might actually build something slightly taller than their detached garage. It’s almost as if some folks believe property rights only extend to their own, already-established, ever-increasing assets.

What the local papers politely ignore is the political calculus. Every one of these vocal opponents is also a reliable campaign donor to the very same 'environmentally conscious' supervisors and council members who then 'reluctantly' side with the loudest voices. It's not about the owls; it's about the optics of NIMBY-ism wrapped in a faux-conservation blanket. Expect a developer-friendly Democrat to make a teary-eyed speech about 'preserving open space' before quietly voting to table the whole idea indefinitely, ensuring their next reelection bid is funded by the very same 'concerned citizens.'

Meanwhile, hardworking folks looking for a place to live will continue to pay exorbitant rents while the Bluffs remain an exclusive vista for those who got there first. And the cycle of complaining about high housing costs while actively blocking new construction will, like the tides, continue to roll in. Perhaps these residents should just put a velvet rope around the entire city and charge admission.
