BUELLTON'S 'CRIME-FREE ZONE' DREAM: SHERIFF STAYS, FOR NOW, FOILING LEFTIST FANTASY

It seems even in the bluest of counties, a small bastion of common sense can occasionally prevail. KSBY News, bless their earnest hearts, recently reported on the Buellton City Council's rather un-woke decision to extend its contract with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office. This, apparently, comes as the city 'weighs future law enforcement options' – a phrase that, in 2026, usually translates to 'how can we appease the vocal minority who think police are the problem, not the solution?'

One can almost picture the struggle sessions behind closed doors. On one side, the realists, probably outnumbered, pointing to pesky things like rising crime rates and the general public's desire not to be robbed blind. On the other, the 'visionaries' – likely fresh off a grant-funded seminar on 'transformative justice' – dreaming of a Buellton where disputes are settled with interpretive dance and 'community healing circles.' Imagine the horror when they realized that actual law enforcement might, indeed, be beneficial when the local organic kombucha store gets shoplifted.

While the Left’s utopian vision of a police-free paradise usually involves replacing deputies with social workers armed with clipboards and empathetic platitudes, Buellton's Council punted that particular progressive fantasy down the road for at least another year. This, of course, means the Sheriff's deputies will continue to inconveniently enforce laws, protect property, and generally keep the peace, much to the chagrin of those who believe that 'equity' means allowing criminals to roam free. It's almost as if they forgot that public safety is, you know, a basic function of government, not an optional experiment.

But don't despair, defunders. This is just a one-year extension. There's still plenty of time for Buellton's more 'enlightened' council members to devise a plan to replace those troublesome, badge-wearing professionals with, say, interpretive dance troupes or perhaps highly trained municipal pigeons. The possibilities for progressive absurdity are, as always, endless when common sense is abandoned at the city limits.
