The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors
BOOSTERS THROW LEMON PARTY FOR PSYLLID SNOUTS! TAXPAYERS GET THE PITS!
Your esteemed County Supervisors just green-lit a paltry $14,982.14 to combat citrus bugs, proving once again their priorities are as clear as a mudslide and their wallets as open as a 24-hour conveni
The DispatchIt appears the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors has once again found a compelling reason to dip into the public coffers, this time for a princely sum of just under fifteen grand to battle the dreaded Asian Citrus Psyllid. While every resident is rightly concerned about the scourge of tiny insects decimating our local citrus, one has to wonder if this latest "agreement" isn't just another thinly veiled opportunity for Sacramento's sprawling bureaucracy, specifically the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), to funnel a few more taxpayer dollars into… well, who knows where exactly?
Because, let's be honest, when the CDFA — a leviathan known for its endless regulations and less-than-stellar track record of actually solving problems without creating ten new ones — is involved, you can bet your last orange there's more peel than fruit to this deal. What exactly are they doing with this reimbursement? Are they deploying tiny, heavily regulated ladybugs with union representation? Or perhaps hiring a consultant to study the psyllid's preferred organic latte blend before issuing a 300-page environmental impact report on a single squished bug?
The fact that this gem of an agenda item bypasses CEQA is almost as amusing as the amount itself. "Government funding mechanisms and/or fiscal activities" aren't a "project" under environmental review? So, if we’re just *spending* money, we don’t need to worry about environmental impact? That’s certainly a novel interpretation of the law, one that conveniently allows the gravy train to chug along unimpeded. While hardworking taxpayers are left wondering if this measly sum will even buy enough bug spray to handle a single backyard lemon tree, the Sacramento-based politburo continues its relentless march towards turning every local problem into another opportunity for state-level overreach and a chance to expand its own parasitic footprint, bug or no bug.
