The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors
BOARDS OF SUPERVISION: NOBODY WANTS TO BE A ‘SPECIAL DISTRICT’ STOOGE!
Your esteemed Board of Supervisors, in their infinite wisdom, can't even get warm bodies to fill local 'special district' roles, proving once again that government work is the least appealing gig in t
Campus BeatIt seems Santa Barbara County's administrative apparatus is so incredibly appealing, so undeniably efficient, that absolutely no one is lining up to join its ranks. Our beloved Board of Supervisors recently had to acknowledge the grim reality that, despite their tireless efforts to manage every sneeze and whisper in the county, several 'Special District' offices remain tragically vacant for the upcoming November 3, 2026, General Election.
Yes, folks, the 'County Clerk, Recorder, and Assessor' (a title so grand it practically begs for a parade) issued a 'Certificate of Facts' detailing the profound lack of interest. Eight districts, count 'em, EIGHT, have no candidates. None. Zero. You'd think with all the power and prestige involved in, say, the Lompoc Cemetery District, there'd be a stampede. Apparently, the only thing stampeding is the tax money out of our wallets.
The Supervisors, ever keen to ensure the bureaucratic gears grind on, are now directing staff to 'conduct outreach' to potential candidates. Translation: beg someone, anyone, to pretend to care. And, naturally, they've declared this act of administrative desperation is definitely, absolutely, positively 'not a project under the California Environmental Quality Act.' Because, of course, the spiritual and fiscal degradation of our local government doesn't count as an 'environmental change' in their lexicon.
This whole charade perfectly illustrates why conservatives keep saying government needs to get out of the way. When the only 'change' you're managing is the ever-expanding list of things nobody wants to do, maybe it's time to ask if those 'Special Districts' are really that special after all. Or perhaps the only thing they're specializing in is a complete lack of public enthusiasm.
