BEHAVIORAL WELLNESS: PAYING STUDENTS TO BE 'WELL'?
Santa Barbara County’s ever-expanding bureaucracy, Behavioral Wellness, is again offering scholarships, ostensibly to future practitioners, but really just another cycle of self-perpetuating virtue si

Campus BeatNoozhawk reports the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness has opened applications for its annual John Kovacs Scholarship. Now, why an arm of county government, funded by YOUR tax dollars, is doling out scholarships for “persons who identify as having mental health and/or substance use disorder challenges” to pursue careers in the same field is beyond us. It seems less about fostering genuine wellness and more about cultivating a self-sustaining ecosystem of grievance and 'lived experience' – a perpetually full employment program for those who can articulate their 'challenges' most effectively.
While the rest of us are busy navigating the actual world, paying our taxes, and trying to keep our businesses afloat despite crippling regulations, Santa Barbara’s progressive leadership is busy ensuring a steady supply of therapists, counselors, and 'peer navigators' all funded by the same taxpayers. It's a closed-loop system: the county creates the problem with over-regulation and a culture of dependence, then funds the 'solutions' through endless departments and grants, all while patting itself on the back for its 'compassion.'
One has to wonder if these scholarships are less about actual education and more about securing future votes and expanding the progressive client-state. After all, what better way to ensure a compliant electorate than to create a class of people whose livelihoods depend on the very governmental structures being championed? It's a brilliant, if insidious, bit of political engineering, ensuring that the 'challenges' never quite go away, because solving them would mean shrinking the very bureaucracy that funds them. Meanwhile, the actual cost of living here continues to skyrocket, leaving genuine self-sufficiency a luxury few can afford.
