AUGUST IS CHILD SUPPORT AWARENESS MONTH! WILL S.B. SUPERVISORS BE AWARE OF THEIR OWN KIDS?

It seems the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors, those tireless innovators of governance, have once again proven their unparalleled knack for tackling pressing issues. Forget the runaway spending, the housing crisis exacerbated by their own policies, or the crumbling infrastructure. No, dear taxpayers, the real heavy lifting happens when they declare August 2026 to be 'Child Support Awareness Month.' Because, you know, prior to this earth-shattering proclamation, nobody was aware of child support.

One can only imagine the intense, closed-door negotiations and rigorous policy debates that led to this monumental decision. Was it a PowerPoint presentation with pie charts demonstrating the severe lack of 'child support awareness' among the populace? Did a staffer bravely point out that mere 'support' wasn't enough, but rather 'awareness' of said support was the true missing link? Perhaps they believed that without their official decree, parents across the county would simply forget about their financial obligations to their children. It’s truly a wonder how society managed to function before the Board came along to raise awareness about, well, basic legal requirements.

This isn't just about the Board's penchant for performative bureaucracy, though. It’s a classic move from the progressive playbook: when in doubt, declare a month, form a committee, and pat yourselves on the back for 'doing something.' The real story, of course, is the endless churn of the administrative state, generating paper and platitudes while the actual costs of living in Santa Barbara County continue to soar, making it harder for parents – both custodial and non-custodial – to meet those very obligations. But hey, at least we're all 'aware' now, right? Maybe next month they can declare 'Awareness of Awareness Month.'

While the Supervisors bask in the glow of their latest 'proclamation,' perhaps they should also consider proclaiming a 'Taxpayer Awareness Month,' where they become acutely aware of how much of our hard-earned money is wasted on these kinds of empty gestures. Or better yet, 'Fiscal Responsibility Awareness Month.' We won't hold our breath. But rest assured, The Whipping Post is aware of their every move, especially the ones that make you shake your head.
