While local taxpayers are constantly reminded that only big government can solve our problems, it seems the humble citizens of Xaisomboun province, Laos, didn't get the memo. According to reports, including the mildly disoriented prose over at KEYT NewsChannel 3-12, a group of villagers trapped in a cave had the audacity to, well, rescue themselves. Imagine the horror! All those perfectly good emergency responder uniforms, all the carefully planned photo ops, all the grandstanding press conferences – utterly ruined because a few individuals took initiative.

One can almost hear the furious whispers from the world's burgeoning bureaucracy: 'Don't they understand the protocols? The command structure? The endless meetings required to even consider a 'Phase One Assessment'?' This is a grave insult to the global aid industrial complex, which thrives on protracted suffering and dramatic, 'expert'-led interventions. What are we to do if people start solving their own problems? It undermines the very foundation of perpetual crisis management.

This incident is a stark reminder that sometimes, the 'experts' and the 'authorities' are more interested in the spectacle of a problem than its actual solution. Perhaps if these Laotians had just waited patiently, and perhaps filled out a few dozen forms in triplicate, a proper, government-approved rescue, complete with ample media coverage and a hefty bill for taxpayers, could have been arranged. Their self-sufficiency is quite frankly, an inconvenience.

Frankly, it's almost as if these villagers — likely unburdened by 'equity assessments' and 'climate impact statements' — simply saw a problem and fixed it. A revolutionary concept, to be sure. Let’s hope this troubling display of human agency doesn't catch on, lest we dismantle the entire rationale for the ever-expanding bloat of public services that promise everything but deliver very little, unless you count endless regulations and higher taxes.
