ADIEU, BOOMER QUEEN: INDY MOURNS SHEILA, FORGETS HER LEGACY OF... STUFF

The Santa Barbara Independent waxes poetic about a former mayor, conveniently omitting the less-than-charming details of her reign over the city by the sea.

Santa Barbara’s reliably sentimental weekly, the Independent, has dusted off its rose-tinted glasses yet again, this time to pen a gushing obituary for former Mayor Sheila Lodge. Apparently, some of their writers were so sheltered in childhood they believed all mayors magically materialized as kindly grandmothers, rather than the political animals they truly are. It’s comforting to know that even after all these years, the Indy still treats local politics with the wide-eyed wonder of a toddler discovering finger paint.

While the Independent’s tribute focuses on Lodge's trailblazing gender, they seem to have memory-holed the nitty-gritty of her actual policy decisions – you know, the stuff that impacts mortals who pay taxes and try to build things. One might recall a certain era where local development was less about creating housing or jobs and more about ensuring the “right” aesthetic was preserved, often at immense cost to anyone not already comfortably ensconced in a historic adobe. It’s almost as if some political figures are remembered for their perceived virtue, rather than their practical impact on, say, the cost of a two-bedroom apartment or the ease of opening a small business.

Perhaps the Independent's selective nostalgia is precisely why our sunny little slice of California now boasts some of the fiercest regulatory hurdles and most exorbitant housing prices in the nation. After all, if you spend enough time admiring the *idea* of a political figure, you might just overlook the actual consequences of their tenure. We at The Whipping Post prefer to remember that behind every well-meaning progressive politician, there's usually a mountain of red tape and a valley of stagnant economic growth.

So, while the Indy mourns the passing of a municipal matriarch, we’ll just quietly observe how the progressive infrastructure she helped solidify continues to choke the ingenuity and affordability out of our county. But don't worry, future generations will still have those lovely highly regulated, impossibly expensive, Spanish-tiled façades to admire. It's truly a legacy to weep for, though perhaps not for the reasons the Independent believes.
